The Lighter Side

In getting to know Deborah, we discovered that she’s a Scotswoman at heart and holds a special place in her heart for Marie Curie, Emily Dickinson, Peter Jackson, and Todd Rungren.

What makes your heart sing?
Those rare moments with family or friends that have a magical/mystical/sacred feel to them. Moments that can feed my soul for weeks, months, or years to come. Often wordless. Frequently occurring outdoors. You can’t search for them or try to create them. They sort of fall into one’s lap.

What’s your dream vacation spot?
Scotland. I went there in 2018 with two friends as part of a tour group. The landscapes, history, people, and food combined to tantalize me into a return trip. I’m of Scottish descent, so I feel a particular affinity for the country.

What’s something that most people don’t know about you?
I’m an amateur Emily Dickinson scholar.

Which historical figure do you most admire?
Madame Marie Curie. She overcame multiple challenges throughout her life. She raised two daughters alone after losing her young husband in a tragic horse and buggy accident. She encountered resistance to her scientific endeavors and her studies/theories/discoveries from the male-dominated scientific field. She bravely put herself in danger during WWI to provide battlefield X-ray services.

Which living person would you most like the opportunity to meet?
Oh, that’s a toss up. It’s between director Peter Jackson and musician Todd Rundgren. I want to meet Jackson to talk with him about his casting choices and creative processes behind the original “Lord of the Rings” movie trilogy. And Rundgren…just to tell him how much his music has meant to me through my life (I’ve been a fan since 1970) and how his music has encouraged and inspired me. Maybe get a chance to sing a duet.

What legacy do you want to leave the world?
To quote John Wesley: “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.”

What’s your most treasured childhood possession that you still have?
Although it’s not in my possession, I see it every year at Christmastime at my brother’s house. It’s my Christmas stocking from when I was a child. It reminds me of the love and care my parents put into our Christmas celebrations.
